about

Most of my life I've grown up in rural parts of the United States, first in Vermont and for the last few years in Southern Arizona. There is a feeling in these places of being left behind, as the people grow older and poorer, relying on dwindling public assistance while the young become increasingly dispossessed as jobs and opportunities become scarce. This is particularly stark in southern Arizona, where people who's homes and lives and bodies are falling apart and are juxtaposed with a government who seems endlessly willing to spend resources not on improving our lives, but militarizing the place we call home to “protect” us from other people who are seeking shelter from a place where their own homes and lives and bodies are threatened.

This is an album about living poor in rural United States, about being tired to the bone, about the unique relationship we develop with entropy when we don't have the time or the resources to keep the things in our lives in perfect working order. It's about the intimacy of a collapsing barn against the grandeur of storm clouds breaking on a desert mountain and the creeping dread of a border patrol helicopter hovering too low in your back yard.

The name "Shambles" comes in part from the obvious imagery of a run down place, but it also is inspired by a kind of witchcraft practiced in books by Terry Pratchet, where in a witch divines answers from a device made up simply of objects found in their pocket. The people in my community practice shambles every day.

A great big thanks to Tommy Lenahan for sending me gravely floor tom samples, to Ethan Rountree for getting the coyotes to howl, to the man who wishes to remain anonymous but allowed me to record his retelling of his life story, and to Nora Collins for always reminding me dark days deserve light.
